The Kamado Bono Range at Norfolk Stoves
The history of Kamado grills traces back centuries to Japan. The word “Kamado” itself means “stove” or “cooking range” in Japanese. These traditional clay cooking vessels have been used for over 3,000 years in Japan and were originally inspired by the Chinese “Zao” or “Yakitori” clay oven.
The design of the Kamado grill is simple yet effective. It consists of a ceramic shell with a removable lid, vents for controlling airflow, and a cooking grate. The thick ceramic walls of the Kamado grill provide excellent insulation, allowing for precise temperature control and efficient heat retention. This design is ideal for grilling, smoking, and even baking.
During World War II, American soldiers stationed in Japan encountered these clay cooking vessels and were impressed by their efficiency and versatility. They brought the concept back to the United States, and by the 1960s, Kamado-style grills began to gain popularity among American consumers.
In the late 20th century, kamdo grills became very popular in the United States and other parts of the world. These modern versions feature ceramic, they retain the same basic design principles that have made Kamado grills a favorite among outdoor cooking enthusiasts.
Today, Kamado grills are prized for their ability to grill, smoke, bake, and roast with consistent and flavourful results. They have become a staple in many backyard kitchens and are often regarded as one of the most versatile and efficient outdoor cooking devices available.
