What the installer needs to check.

Before installing a premium wood-burning or multi-fuel stove, a professional installer must carry out a rigorous safety and architectural evaluation. Here is our detailed technical checklist.

1. Chimney Condition & Masonry Check

Inspect the external chimney stack for brick degradation, spalling, and mortar crumbling.
Perform a CCTV chimney sweep to look for blockages, nests, and masonry damage internally.
Execute a pressure/smoke leakage test (Class I or Class II) to guarantee gas tightness.
Verify the stability and presence of standard clay pots and appropriate terminal cowls.

2. Flue Route & Lining Options

Calculate the total vertical chimney height to ensure sufficient natural flue pull.
Verify that flue offset angles do not exceed the British Standard limit of 45 degrees.
Assess the suitability of retrofitting a 316-grade or 904-grade twin-skin flexible steel liner.
Plan required access points for chimney sweep doors and technical inspection hatches.

3. Fireplace Opening & Dimensions

Measure builder's opening geometry precisely: height, width, and back-to-front depth.
Inspect structural integrity of the masonry opening, ensuring the load-bearing lintel is robust.
Allow correct convective air gaps around the stove body (ideally 100mm to 150mm on sides).
Determine if there is space for a steel register plate and high-temperature sealing materials.

4. Hearth Requirements & Clearances

Ensure the constructional hearth meets Building Regulations (typically min. 250mm thick concrete).
Verify minimum 12mm thickness if the stove is certified not to heat the hearth below 100°C.
Confirm the hearth extends at least 300mm forward from the stove door opening.
Confirm the hearth extends at least 150mm to each side of the stove's outer body.

5. Ventilation & Fresh Air Supply

Analyze building age and air permeability (homes built after 2008 often need direct external vents).
Determine ventilation requirements for stove outputs above 5kW (minimum 550mm² per kW).
Assess feasibility of a Direct External Air Connection directly to the back of the appliance.
Run mechanical extraction safety tests to make sure kitchen fans do not pull smoke back down.

6. Distances to Combustible Materials

Identify timber structural beams, load-bearing joists, and architectural stud walls.
Measure clearance to adjacent plasterboard, wallpaper, and decorative wood mantels.
Suggest installing calcium-silicate shielding if clearances need to be shortened safely.
Double check individual stove manufacturer requirements for rear and side combustible values.

7. Stove Suitability & Thermal Output

Calculate optimum kW output needed using room volume and insulation variables.
Verify DEFRA exemption requirements if the site is located in a designated Smoke Control Area.
Validate compliance with Ecodesign standards for ultra-clean burning and low emissions.
Select the ideal fuel configuration (dedicated dry wood logs vs. mineral smokeless briquettes).

8. Access, Structural & Building Work

Confirm roof access arrangements: scaffolding, cat ladders, or cherry-picker hire requirements.
Detail required masonry alterations, chambers lining, and rebuilding of the fireplace core.
Specify high-temperature render, heat-resistant plasterboard, or decorative tiling finishes.
Prepare workspace mapping for dust mitigation, floor protection, and heavy lifting pathways.

9. Carbon-Monoxide Alarm & Safety Regulations

Guarantee installation of a HETAS-compliant Carbon Monoxide alarm (compliant with BS EN 50291).
Position alarm correctly: horizontally between 1m to 3m from the stove appliance.
Set correct placement height: either ceiling-mounted, or at least 150mm below ceilings on a wall.
Document official handover process, test the alarm speaker, and complete the installation certificate.
